Speed sensors
Asked by Cryow1985 Aug 03, 2018 at 07:44 AM about the 2015 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 2015 Mercedes sprinter and it seems like a speed
sensor goes out ever month. I have changed out probably
seven in 2018 alone. I get them changed at Mercedes and
it's starting to kill my wallet. Any idea what could be
causing all these failures?

I have a 2014 Sprinter Via built by Winniebago. I have had 5 speed sensors replaced and with the first sensor, it went into Limp Mode and I drove 20mph to Midland-Odessa dealership. It took 8 hours to get there and lucky for me there are back roads from BBend National Park. Another thing I noted is no one knows how to fix these vehicles. Chrysler used to work on the Sprinter but not now. It can be a real challenge and very frustrating. Like how does one deal with Mercedes and make them care about the consumer. I’m a grandma that bought this RV because I believed it would provide me a safe and reliable ride. It’s been a pain. I replaced another wheel sensor last week. This time I bought the sensor from Mercedes and took it to a small automotive shop that replaced it. I crawled under the RV to see how to do this. Geez no big deal. Also I’ve had one sensor cleaned and but back in its little space and it worked fine which makes me think I should have done this with all the sensors. There is so much crud that gets kicked up from the highways and backroads and the sensor sits right in the middle of all that, why wouldn’t it have issues.??? I’m angry at myself for not keeping all my sensors!! The rear are different, the front sensors are the same. Is that true for your rig?? So after raising H with Mercedes finally they blamed the sensor issue on me saying I was caring to much weight. That’s the others thing, Mercedes just point the finger at Winniebago or the owner. I wish I had an answer and maybe its time to ban together in a protest like the ole days. If the truth is put out there for people to read, why would anyone but the wealthy want to deal this with?? Now my check engine light is on and Mercedes said it’s a right side EKAS sensor and to repair it cost $4850.00. They blamed this happening on the consumer. Must be the bio diesel. Sometimes it can’t be helped, I rum it on rare occasions because I have no other choice. So here I sit in Albuquerque, NM and tomorrow I take my RV in to get a second opinion. Can flushing the intake with Wynns or BG clean this sensor.??? That’s my frustrating story. I did not help with the wheel sensor because no one knows. Maybe we need to invest in sensors!! Please let me know what you find out as well. I suspect there’s a lot of people having similar problems and somehow we must ban to gather and hold Mercedes responsible. Shame on them. If they continue on this path it will catch up and bite them right in the BUTT.
I discovered that not all Mercedes Benz dealers actually have a shop that works on Sprinters.... my advice is to find an independent mechanic who can work on your vehicle.....as far as I know..EKAS is part of the emissions system and the entire system is under an extended federal government warranty for 8 years or 80,000 miles... meaning... they should have done this at no charge unless you are over 80,000 miles on your vehicle...Are you??
2013 chassis 2014 Winnebago Navion. Having 3 lights light up on the dash...ABS, and 2 two others. The internet calls them the 3 stooges. It's either one of the 4 wheel speed sensors and now reading it could be the engine speed sensor. Pulled left front sensor myself and yes it is not magic or voodoo. But which one is it? Now looking for scanner to read codes and tell me which one?? Keith in the Ozark s.
I have had both rear speed sensors go out on my 2016 M-B Sprinter 3500. In both cases it was in a rainstorm and in heavy traffic and resulted in very dangerous driving problems. I would recommend that everyone that has had a failure of the speed sensor on their M-B Sprinter file a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (nhtsa.gov). It takes about five minutes to do so. I have spoken with the Service Manager at three different Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Service Centers and they have all told me that this is a well known problem with Mercedes-Benz Sprinters. If we can draw enough attention to this dangerous problem maybe the NHTSA will pursue this issue with Mercedes-Benz. I was told that a special service bulletin was issued last month by Mercedes-Benz to their Service Centers regarding the speed sensor failure issue. Unfortunately we had one fail two weeks ago and they put the same defective sensor back in. Let's see if we can get this issue resolved. theofw
Three stooges! Love it. Well the 3 stooges just came on after braking while using cruise control. Called ahead on our road trip to Medford Oregon, they can’t get us in for 20 days! Advice anyone? (We have a 2014 nation. Bought it lightly used in 2016. First 2 1/2 years of ownership were headaches surrounding DEF sensors. Took too many service appointments to count to resolve.)
This is a problem that is well known to Mercedes. They issued a service bulletin a few weeks ago to their service centers about the speed sensor failures. We had to sit in the dealer service center for 8 hours on July 9, 2019, while they got a response from Mercedes Germany approving them to proceed with fixing our failed speed sensor. I would recommend you file a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (nhtsa.gov ) about the speed sensor failure and maybe we can get them to pressure Mercedes to get the problem fixed. Doesn't help you with your delay right now, but maybe it will in the future. We share your frustrations. We have had the DEF sensor go out, NOX sensor, and two speed sensors. We have spent seven days out of our last four trips in the Mercedes service centers. Good luck. theofw
I have a 2014 sprinter 3500 chassis winnibago View left rear speed sensor went south, checke with Ohm Meter and it was open, called mercedes dealer and they had one in stock, went to pick it up and service manager happened to be standing at the parts counter and asked why I was replacing it. My answer was " because I could". he said they waould do it for no cost as it was still under warranty for the federal emmissions. I didn't know that so he saved me $200.00 . gave me an appointment for the next day at 7:30 am, said I would be out at 8:30...wow...didn't expect that...will follow up later and let everyone know how it turns out.....

I have 2016 Winnebago Navion that has 2015 MB SPRINTER 3500 chassis. After 10,000 miles in January 2029 the ABS/ESP/Traction Control and Cruise lights came on with Visit Workshop. Parked overnight. Lights went out no issues. In January 2020 with 24,000 miles, same issue. Parked overnight. Then a few days later lights came on again. This time after start up a flashing yellow triangle and limp mode engaged. Then Bright red circle with unequal braking. Stopped vehicle. Made it to RV park. The speed sensors should be on recall or extended warranty by MB. Consumers have to get together on this. I did not expect a MB to have these issues at such low mileage. !!
HA! I'm the guy that tagged those lights "The 3 Stooges". 12 wheel sensors, 66K miles and now I sit here with the stooges again. I bought an iCarsoft MB scanner and just updated the firmware. It reads the wheel speeds okay. I played with pulling the ABS fuse which seems to power the ESP box and I get 2500 on each wheel as a rotation speed and 0 with the fuse in. I also get good numbers while driving with the scanner on the dash. The error I have now is missing CANBUS info from ESP unit, which is the black box with the brake hydraulic pump on it pretty much in front of the driver under the hood. The Electronic Transmission box is reporting missing or bad CANBUS from right rear wheel. From what I have figured out the wheel sensors feed into an ECU box and the ESP box gets the data from the ECU and sends it out on the CANBUS to the Transmission Box and maybe other ECU's. This box is complaining no Right Rear Wheel info, not saying a bad sensor. ECU = I guess is Electronic Control Unit CANBUS if you don't know is the network that lets all these ECU's talk to each other, and stands for "Controller Area Network" like LAN stands for "Local Area Network". I have a background in computers and electrical engineering. I'm about to take my Sprinter to the MB shop and end up getting LOUD and pounding my fist on the desk this week.
I spent six hours traveling to dealership in limp in mode because of Mercedes Sprinter wheel speed sensor problem, It is really important to get a bad one fixed quickly as I did not do this and went on a 960 mile trip only to discover that one speed sensor bad will not cause any problems but if two go bad your Sprinter now goes into limp in mode. I will remind you that limp in mode top speed is about 25 miles an hour and the transmission will no longer shift. I have asked numerous scanner companies if their scanners will detect 2007 Sprinter models and newer and none will commit to an answer. Whizbandit on this site did say the iCarsoft Mb scanner did work on his Sprinter however, he did not include his Sprinter's model year so I still do not have a clue which scanner will work with a 2013. It's important as knowing which one is bad will save you five hours of limp in mode driving, 4 hours waiting at the Mercedes dealer and the $750..00 price tag to get a $43.00 wheel sensor replaced at a Mercedes dealer. Hope someone out there can tell me about a scanner which will work on a 2013 Sprinter 3500 3.0 litre so I do not have to jack this thing up and take resistance reading at each wheel and check all sensors every six months when the three lights on the dash re occur. Would appreciate any imput on this subject as it is an expensive habit having to visit Mercedes dealerships.
I have a 2013 Sprinter 3500 RV. The iCarsoft i980 will read and reset wheel sensor errors but will not read the ESP computer that is bolted to the back of the ABS pump. I just ordered the iCarsoft MBII and should be here this week. I found a bad CANBUS in the ESP module by swapping in a used one from a 2017 Sprinter 3500 with 11K miles on it, fixed all the errors. Now I had tried a 2013 Sprinter 2500 module with 66K miles on it and it puked. The wheel sensor and CANBUS errors were cleared and gone but now I had SAS (Steering Angle Sensor) calibration errors that kept the stooges lit and now the BIG RED BRAKE error lite. I assume the 3500 needs to have this calibrated which the i980 scanner won't do. I do know the sensors for a 2013 and newer are different. I bought a set for the older Sprinter and they just don't work even though the plug is the same. I did discover there is a CANBUS patch panel under the passenger side kick panel. I checked all the plugs (after marking their location which I was told is very important) and applied contact cleaner paste with Cramolin R5. The two ground bolts we a bit shady looking so I cleaned them up and tortured them a bit better.
I now keep a set of rear wheel sensors in my tool bay with a 1/4" deep socket on a 1/4" ratchet which works perfect to change them from underneath. A few dozen tyewraps and it can be done at the RV parking anywhere. Carry a movers blanket from HF to lay on. The 2013 Sprinter 3500 part# are here: RT REAR = 906 905 11 01 LT REAR = 906 905 10 01
I have a 2013 Sprinter 3500 and i am on my second set of rear wheel speed sensors. I also got stuck in limp mode and after driving for 2 hours i had to call a tow truck and he had to tow me for two more hours just to get to the nearest Mece dealer. Sat in the dealer for entire day. Totally ruined two days of my vacation and my friends with me. I brought this vehicle because i thought i would have no problems like this over and over again. What a disgrace on Mercedes. Thanks for all your in put, Now i guess im going to have to learn how to clean NOC sensors and replace speed sensors, what a joke. How much is this icarsoft i980 cost ? Im not that computer tech but is it easy to read what sensors went bad and fix it and clear the fail code ?
Thank you GuruMJQ5Q for your speed sensor information. It cost me $1446.91 to get two sensors replaced in Jacksonville, Florida. Sensors will set a D40C and D40B event code in the electronic transmission control module N30/4 can bus signal. These sensors are supposed to be in warranty for 2 years after merc dealer install. Unfortunately, it is very hard to get the dealer to honor this warranty because mine have gone again. I guess it is worth buying the iCarSoft i980 to get the sensor information when only one goes bad because if you wait until two rear ones go bad you will be put into limp in mode and if your a great distance from your destination you probably will need to be towed as limp in mode top speed seems to be around 39 MPH with transmission not shifting. The alternative more expensive method is to buy a MB Star C4 diagnostic tool costing around $1000.00 if you wish to reset dash lights after repairs. The $1000.00 figure is for a chinese clone which most purchasers report don't last forever.. There are some very good forums relating to these on the internet. There are so many people who have had this problem and are fleeced out of paying large bills for these repairs that one can only come to the conclusion that this is a policy which keeps Merc dealer repair facilities fat and wealthy. I only wish there was a way that all Sprinter owners could share more information about the problems with these vehicles or at the very least could share private messages to other owners on this forum to share questions about other specific headaches about the Sprinters without wading through long delays in getting simple questions answered quickly. Thanks again to James GuruMJQ5Q for his information and I only wish we could share more information regarding diagnostic coding with one another to help other owners who bought a Sprinter thinking it was the best of the RV's
Does anyone know what type of socet fits the speed sensor, ? it looks like a stare type iv never seen this type before, is it a special tool to buy ? See Photo attached of the speed sensor.
You will need an inverted torx I will have to look up what the size it is but usually you can find these in a set at most Snap ON dealer, Matco tools and in some cases O'reilleys, Autozone ,ect.. I also have been able to get the bolt off with a 16 point socket I will have to check the size on this also. The sixteen point socket easily slips off and will turn if you do not take extra attention to holding it on straight and force a lot of downward pressure on it while unscrewing it. This particular method will kind of round off the fastener which makes further use of this bolt questionable., but it will get it off. Just to let everyone know these are the bolts which hold the rear Sprinter wheel speed sensor in place (particularly on 2013 Sprinters like mine and newer). I will check sizes within a couple of days and post.
Sorry for not posting this before now , however I could not find my 16 point small socket which works on this wheel speed sensor bolt as asked in a question from GuruMJQ5Q . I did find the inverted torx which will get the removal of bolt done , it is a number E8 snap on socket. This will work , Mercedes probably will sell you one for a couple of hundred bucks and snap on will sell you one for $12.50 , and home depot will sell it for $5.63. Hope this helps.
Is it time for a class action lawsuit? Anyone interested? My 2016 sprinter 3500 with 14k miles has has left rear wheel speed sensor replaced twice, right rear once and front right once, so far. This is ridiculous. My MB Warrenty expires in 4 weeks. guess I’ll have to look into an extended warranty.
I agree with (Guru7XJ570) completely. It gets to the point that you are afraid to drive the Sprinter anywhere. Unfortunately, that is the tip of the iceberg, the problems relating to the NOX and catalytic converter system are even more concerning. There are numerous problems with these systems on the 3.0 engine and will almost certainly cause you problems in the future. The most important thing you can do as an owner is not let this vehicle run at idle for long periods of time and also avoid short trips in which the regen system has not gotten up to its proper temperatures before vehicle is shut off. The soot build up in the emissions plumbing on this vehicle will cost you big DOLLARS to repair . There are many many complaints out there regarding these vehicles , it is bewildering why there aren't more recalls involving these complaints. The only way I can make sense of all this , is that Mercedes buyers of this vehicle usually can afford all these repairs.and don't want to create an embarrassing problem within the glorious Mercedes dealerships. I agree a class action suit is needed but getting Mercedes owners to dignify themselves to such lowly endeavours may be hard to accomplish. These problems can only be taken seriously by the legal system if and when they relate to safety related problems. At some future time people will loose their lives regarding these concerns , especially regarding the speed sensors, and then perhaps the Nationsl Highway and Safety Administration will finally do its job.
answer for GuruMUQ5Q UPDATE found my other socket to remove rear wheel speed sensor . Use the inverted torx (number E8) or a 3/8 dirvie quarter inch 16 point socket . This socket works on mine so it should work on yours as well.
Just had to replace a speed sensor for the 2nd time on my 2013 Itasca...$410 ! What s wrong with a company like MB that can t make a vehicle that doesn t need a &400+ repair so often? I only have 40 000 miles ! Write letters demand refunds or just trade them off & some other poor guy or gal ends up With the problem.
Just had the front right speed sensor replaced at MB dealer. Unit going off warranty in 8 days. Per dealership, repair at dealer under warranty has no warranty, but a repair done not under warranty (you pay) has a two year warranty. This is the 4th sensor replaced. Has anyone focused on what manufacturer of the speed sensor is having the problem? There appears to be 3 or 4 different manufacturers for the speed sensors. Are they all having the problem? Also on this latest repair, the invoice stated: "FOUND RIGHT FRONT SENSOR READING 6500 KM/HR WITH VEHICLE AT A STANDSTILL". Hey has anyone driven their RV at 4000 miles per hour? I may have set a new land speed record. I don't think the SR-71 ever made that speed! Also the Dealer I went to, RBM of Atlanta in Roswell GA (they are a very nice dealer and I have no problems with them...this problem is with MB) and they told me that they have never seen the speed sensor problem on Sprinter Vans....E.G. the Amazon Delivery Vans, [which are 2500 diesels] etc. They only see it on RV based Chassis Sprinter 3500's. Of course they are speculating that it has something to do with the weight being carried by the Sprinter RV....but the speed sensors are NOT a mechanical part. No moving parts. The sensor that goes into the wheel and magnetically senses the wheel spinning and reports that as an electric current to the ABS computer....at least that's how I understand it. Anyone have any additional information?
Wow reading all this is truly enlightening. I have just driven my 2014 3500 from Fl to Mt and working with independent truck service mechanics (Floyds Truck Center in Rapid City and Translution in Missoula) have just had my rr speed sensor replaced. But ABS and ESP lights still on and no cruise control for the last 1500 miles. Pretty disgusted with Mercedes - after only 34k miles have sunk over $4k into emissions problems as mentioned above. Not being a mechanic or electrical tech I bought Sprinter thinking it should be reliable since you see them around the world as emergency and even heavily laden police vehicles. Maybe its just the US models that suffer these afflictions??? I dread and sympathize with you folks that have limped into service facilities. No confidence in ones vehicle and being 4k miles from completing my trip is indeed stressful!! If anyone can advise on a class action lawsuit I will certainly like to participate.

2016 Sprinter body on my Winnebago Navion and this is the 3rd sensor to fail. The first two were under warranty now I have to pay $490 plus tax to fix it. This is ridiculous and makes the car dangerous to drive! Scary when it happens 1200 miles from home and you're by yourself and the rv is bucking on the highway. I'm afraid it will keep happening and I only have 36,000 miles on it.
I am having my second wheel sensor replaced on a 2016 Winnebago View, 3500 Mercedes. The technician who did the first one also mentioned that he only sees this problem on the RVs, never the Sprinter cargo vans. I just purchased an iCarSoft MB II scanner for $150. It is frustrating that you buy what is marketed as an reliable vehicle and you find out that Mercedes and their dealers know this is a problem and all they do is to keep on charging suckers like me $500 or so to replace a defective part that probably costs them $35. The technician also said that the replacement sensor is exactly the same as the one that failed so I should expect it to fail also. The dealer today charged me $185 to do the scan.
Hey, anyone determined if the speed sensor failures are focused on a specific manufacturer of the sensor? RockAuto.com shows multiple manufactures: Bosch, Holstein, Interstate, API, ATE, Vemo, TruckTec all seem to have this part....of course they could all have been manufactured in the same KungFlu manufacturing facility. My latest repair was warranty and MB dealer (RBM of Atlanta) said I could not have the part because they send warranty replacement parts back to MB for evaluation. So, MB MUST KNOW about this...there is some warehouse full of replaced speed sensors. I was Lucky (?) in that this last sensor replace (4 of them now) was about 9 days before 3/36 warranty expired. I bit the bullet and bought an MB Extended Limited Warranty (ELM)...because unless this speed sensor issue is resolved, I'll use over the $4K cost of the warranty in replacement speed sensors at a MB dealer....unfortunately.
Hey Fellow Sprinter 3500 chassis based RV's: Did you buy your RV from Camping World? If so, go to https://rv.campingworld.com/marcusvip and send a message to the Camping World CEO. Ask him to pressure MB. If he said he would stop selling these defective Sprinter 3500 based Class "C"s until MB fixed the problem, I'll bet it would be fixed in a week. Also file a complaint. One for each Speed Sensor failure to the National Transportation Highway Safety Assoc at https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ Lets raise some H E double hockey sticks!!!
All good info. I currently have my van into Transolution in Missoula, they are researching why the ESP ABS is still malfunctioning (which affects my cruise control). I will report results next time I have internet. Purchased my van through Sportsmobile in Huntington Indiana as special order from Germany. Was delivered to dealer in Chicago and I drove it for a year as an empty cargo van then returned it to Sportsmobile to do conversion. I will certainly file complaint as suggested by Guru7xj57 Thanks
Just filed a complaint with NHTSA, everyone needs to !!
Have replaced 3 wheel sensors, one twice within 7000 miles. Also 2 motor sensors for $1800. I completely agree with a class action suit against Mercedes.. If one is started I am sure Mercedes would respond, they don’t want bad pr.
Hi! I have had an issue with my 2007 Dodge Sprinter 3500 with a Winnebago attached. I was driving on I40 and The sprinter lost power, ABS light came on along with ESP, wheel rotate light and brake light illuminated. I pulled over and turned off the sprinter. Waited a few minutes and then tried starting it. It wouldn’t crank or start. It would just click. I disconnected the positive on battery and waited some more. Still no crank. Now I’m panicking as I’m in the middle of the AZ desert. Tried calling for a tow truck. Long story short, I ended up being stranded for over 2 hours. My dad recommended trying to bleed air from fuel line. In the manual, it says to insert key, turn to ON and wait a few seconds. Then, turn they key to start and keep turning it but do not do it for then 60 seconds. By some act of god it started!! I turned around and drove to flagstaff to rest. Check engine light was on but it was running!! Check engine light said faulty speed sensor. I got the rear wheel sensors replaced. I thought I was good. Nope. I just tried again to drive to flagstaff and same issue however, I’ve learned to just pull over turn off sprinter and restart. Any insight would be great as I continue to try and troubleshoot. thanks, Anthony
OK folks: Today, 9/8/2020, I received a legal notice Postcard about a Ford F series door latch settlement. I called that contact and asked for the name of the law firm handling this. They are Denlea & Carton, LLP out of White Plains NY. I CALLED THEM and John Leifert, ESQ picked up the phone EST at 6:22PM !! I explained the SPRINTER SPEED SENSOR PROBLEM to John and he said he would research/look into it and get back to me. I mentioned that this problem is all over the Internet AND I was a royal Pain with MB Customer Service “Executive Referral Manager” at 800-367-6372 with a result of a big ZERO from them. I couldn't get the “Executive Referral Manager” to refer me up the food chain. I suggest you place a call to MB Customer Service yourself. Tell the person answering the phone you want to talk to Milton the "Executive Referral Manager". Milton will not give you has last name, but it's fun trying. I'll wait a while to see if John at Denlea & Carton, LLP gets back to me from 914-331-0100. I'm not suggesting calling that Law firm, but I'm not suggesting you not do so either. Also, FYI: here is the email address of the VP of customer Services at MB: christian.treiber@mbusa.com. I was told by Milton that Christian DID get my email, but he passed it down the food chain to the “Executive Referral Manager”...who buried it. Also, here is the email address of the Chief Executive Officer of MBUSA: nicholas.speeks@mbusa.com. Both of these email addresses are publicly obtainable from Elliott.org. Hit 'em with your best shot as the song says. Finally, here's a NHTSA email address you can cc: steven.posada@dot.gov Finally, if I haven't mentioned it above, I've now had 5 replaced sensors in 15K miles on my 2018 Thor Chateau 24FS RV that is on a 2016 Sprinter 3500 Diesel chassis. Sorry, one more thing. Try calling CampingWorlds CEO Hotline (if you bought from them) and tell them "Your not Happy, so Marcus isn't happy". That's the CEO's motto. 866-232- 8990 is the number. I talked to David B who finally hung up on me when I told him I wasn't happy and was not going to hang up. That's an interesting game to play with Customer no-Service: They are apparently trained to not hang up on you and be a good listener, so you can just badger them over and over (at least semi-politely) and they just will not hang up....after 15 minutes or so they eventually will....but it's at least a small bit of satisfaction to make them listen to you whine at them for a while. I had to same "they don't want to hang up on you" scenario with MB Customer Service (number above). Take ACTION. I’ve done my best. Your turn.

We just purchased a 2016 Jayco Melbourne 24K on the sprinter chassis with the 3 Liter Diesel. 18,000 Miles. While traveling through Jackson Hole, WY we experienced lurching and quick acceleration/stopping followed by the check engine light coming on. After purchasing a scanner at O'Reilly's auto parts we found it had code C0037 for a Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor. We purchased a 5 year ESP for this RV to cover our MB investment. After reading this thread, I think we made a wise choice to do this! Hopefully this is something that MB addresses soon!
VERY IMPORTANT!!! The NHTSA sent me a notification dated February 12, 2021, NHTSA Recall Number 21V042 that Mercedes Benz would be issuing a recall effective February 22, 2021, to replace rear speed sensors on MB 3500 Sprinter with a "more robust" speed sensor. It affects over 40,000 MB vehicles. Thanks to all of you who like me filed complaints with the NHTSA to get this issue addressed (hopefully). Safe travels.
Did anyone else get this letter from MB extending the warranty on speed sensors? It provides for a possible reimbursement of past uncovered replacement.
Guru9T2SDT answered 3 years ago
if problem with rear speed sensors the main problem, recall is only for the rear sensors. How often do the front wheel sensors have same problem?
My van is a 2014 3500 6cyl I have not had any issues with front wheel sensors and being a non-mechanic will have to research whether they even exist. I did just (March 2021) receive an IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL INTERIM NOTICE from Mercedes stating that they will replace rear- wheel sensors with "new sensors having improved robustness to moisture intrusion". "Unfortunately the parts to remedy this issue are currently not available" They also provide a VIN based recall website to determine whether your vehicle has had the free remedy performed. www.mbvans.com/sprinter/owners-resources/recall I had the right rear replaced by Transolution in Missoula last June, the first replacement did not correct the problem but they went to Mercedes and got the OE sensor and it has worked well for over 4k miles and some pretty rough terrain. I also just received (again dated March 2021) a package pertaining to a Class action suit for substantial emission modifications and extended warranty. I have not researched this yet but it looks worth following up with MB

We had one at our shop that, long story short, needed a right rear AXLE SHAFT. This is the only way to replace the seals, which were allowing gear lube into where the pulse wheel is, causing an erroneous signal after a short time. Hope this helps.

We have a 2018 Mercedes Benz Motor home. It’s been a nightmare from day one..!! There was a steering wheel hose recall in 2020 and we never received that notice till a different Recall did get to us concerning the Rear Sensor’s which No parts are available lol and I’m beside furious.. We have been told Do not drive as it’s not safe). We bought it just before Covid took place so it got parked. We put no more then 300 Miles on it. I’m told Mercedes was aware of this problem back in September of 2020 so they let all Mercedes owners be out on the Roads not knowing this till February 2021.. Here we Sit making payments on a Unit we can’t drive. One guy told me it could take up to 2 years to get the part.. Class Action lawsuit’s are worthless. The lawyers make the Money. We don’t deserve this and there are over 60,000 Mercedes Benz Owners going through this.. I also hear rear Sensors are common to go out..!! Severe Accidents can happen and I want this Unit Fixed and Sold as there’s no way I will ever Trust Mercedes Benz Sprinter 3500. Mercedes Benz are not backing up there Motorhome’s and they should do a buy back if nothing else.. I did make a Complaint with the Safety hotline. I wish a bunch of us could get together and hire a lawyer to out right Sue Mercedes..Text me if anyone of you have gone after Mercedes please
Today I had the 'Emissions Upgrade' done on my 2011 Sprinter chassis with a Win. VIA body. I have been using an MBII for a couple of years. It has saved thousands of dollars on repairs and resets. After the upgrade, the MBII no longer reads real time data and the forced regeneration function does not work. You don't suppose MB changed the code in the computer they replaced during the 'Upgrade' to disable these diagnostic tools????

Great news! Just had the rear wheel sensor again occur during a thunderstorm in Chicago. Reset the error for left wheel rear speed sensor three times then when in dry weather the error stopped. Called my local Mercedes dealer in Bentonville. Amazing. Mercedes will replace the emission system, replace the rear wheel speed sensors, then send a 3500 check to me. Manna from heaven. Thank you to all who have worked to make the repair and check possible. Will believe check when I see it!
In case you didn't know, the wheel speed sensors are part of a recall. Take your vehicle to somewhere and get them replaced, even your independent mechanic. Contact Mercedes about a reimbursement. I did and the dealership sent me a check. Or, call Mercedes Benz customer care and tell them your issue. Act fast, this is going away soon, I think this month.
One more thing to add to this conversation. When I had my two rear wheel sensors replaced by the independent mechanic the price was around $450 for the two. When I hear that the Mercedes dealership is charging $1,800 for this it's just so unnecessary Find a good independent mechanic you can trust to work on your vehicle.
The Mercedes sprinter dealer near me (Fredericksburg) has gotten in the speed sensor replacement parts for the recall. I just made an appointment for next week to have them installed. I will keep my fingers crossed in hopes this fixes the problem for good.
