Does the tapping increase with engine speed? Also is it a tap which is light or a knock which is a heavier sound? It makes a difference in what it could be.

Sounds more like a tapping sound rather than a knock. Doesn't get louder with speed. Different opinions from different Mechanics. One guy says "bottom knock, pull engine ", the other guy says "sounds like top tap", use Lucas Oil Treatment.

You may be just hearing the fuel injectors, if it was mechanical, the noise should increase with the speed of the engine. Does the car run rough and do you have check engine light?

Thanks, I'll either raise octane in fuel or add some fuel injection cleaner. Mechanically, car rides like new!

After applying Lucas, the tapping / ticking noise persists. No check engine, no rough ride etc. Just a ticking. How about lifters?

If it were the lifters the additive should have made some difference but If the noise is at the top of the engine i'm still thinking that it may still be injector tick, would need to hear in person to be sure.

If that is what it is you can have the injectors cleaned but there is no guarantee that it will quiet them down. The injector is an electronically controlled valve that opens and closes with an injector pulse.

Sorry for responding late. Thank you for your help! Tapping, ticking still persists yet car gets 26mpg hwy. Sound doesn't increase, now car has been driven 43k miles. Driving me nuts.

Pull valve cover off on the side in question, find the oil restricter on right side of the head, you have to remove the latter frame over the cam journals to find it, but 4.6 intech sate notorious for small pieces of gaskets to lodge in the oil restricter causing the valves to tick...Lucas will quiet the problem but only because it makes it easier for oil to pass through the blockage...This is a common issue with the dohc 4.6.

Oh and the oil restricter pulls out with some pliers and elbow grease. You can even google 4.6 oil restricter and find a YouTube video to give you a better picture of what I'm talking about

I have a 2004 Lincoln town car ultimate with 277,000 miles on the clock original motor and it runs like a top gets good mileage uses very little oil but when it’s cold I’ll fire it up and it sounds like everything that engine that’s got some clearance is rattling a little bit but it’s mostly on the top end and honestly it almost sounds like an old non-turbo 62 diesel. But it quiet down after a bit not so much after it’s warmed up but after I assume the oil gets to the top and on a cold day. I’ve got a pretty good grasp on how it ended works out to be a mechanic which is neither here nor there I suppose but I have never actually pull the valve cover off of a 4.62 valve single overhead cam engine. After so long is there a way to adjust the valve tablets? Is this just normal wear and tear and until I pull it apart and go through it or put a motor in it just live with it? I’m sitting at it right now it is 28° outside and it’s quiet as a mouse I guarantee if I let this thing sit for three or four hours for it back up We are right back to us having like a diesel. It sounds like a series of the same thing going on at once. Lead me to believe lifters are slow to pump up or we got a valve lash issue it makes a lot of noise until the oil pressure gets to the top and it takes up the slack. Going to try running have your oil and it will see what happens. I know I can’t be the only guy that has had this happen before so I would assume at least what are you guys know what’s going on or have found out the hard way or the easy way on how to quiet down. Thanks in advance for any and all help. banshefreek03@yahoo.com
