Need step by step instructions on how to remove oil pump
any special tools needed and how much if had a home
mechanic work instead of shop. First time for me doing
one so may have a shadytree home mechanic do bit still
want to know the steps incase I rather do it myself

Search you tube for a video, a picture is worth a thousand words. You will be replacing the oil pump itself, not repairing it. To give you an idea of the top of my head, everything would need to be disconnected from the underside of the engine. You would need a cherry picker to lift the front of the engine to get the oil pan out. There will be two bolts for the oil pump. When removing it there is going to be a shaft that goes up to the distributor that will come out with the oil pump. Best to find a video on this.
A 97 Lincoln will have a 4.6 engine. Unless you are an accomplished do it yourselfer, leave this repair to an expert. The entire front timing cover needs to come off to get to the oil pump. It does NOT have a distributor and the pump is not in the oil pan. While it is apart would be a good time to install new timing chain tensioners and rubbing blocks.
A good write up with all the steps necessary to replace this pump are at the link below. Timing chains will have to removed as well. Like I said, unless you know what you are doing do not attempt this repair.
