Can I start the truck and run a wire from the coil to the battery and just shut

No, fix the problem. What do you mean eliminated the points? Did you put a HEI distributor in? Probably not. How about replacing the condenser by the points? And they use to have one at the coil also. Are you sure it is not a fuel issue?

Rowefast I do have an hei, for some reason I think it has something to do with ignition as it simply runs great for 15 min then it is like the key gets turned off. Either a bad wire that seems to be hot that runs from the coil to the fuse box. Do you think it could be the photocell in the distributor

Yes, with the HEI there is a Ignition Control Module in the distributor under the rotor. What happens is when they start to go bad, the heat of the engine affects it and cuts out. You can have it tested at like Auto Zone, the ICM and the coil. But you have to make sure your engine does not have a fuel issue also, It may be the carb is flooding out. When the engine is warmed up turn it off or let it die, Look down the throat of the carb, and if you see any steam coming up from the butter flies or see gad going threw, it is flooding. May want to check fuel pressure also, it should be like 4 to 7 lbs.
