transmission problems
Asked by stschu Jul 01, 2007 at 04:50 PM about the 2002 Mazda Protege
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Is there any known problem with the Mazda protege 2002 5 door transmission or controls thereof. There always seemed to be a problem with the overdrive light coming off and on out of nowhere.
Now, while driving, the tranny went out completely, on a 5 year old car, well maintained, with 25K miles.
Any history on this? thanks.

There are no reports of any major transmission issues. I think you have just gotten extremely unlucky. In a car with only 25,000 miles that should not be happened. If you need to take it to a specialist I have always had a pleasant experience with Aamco Transmission Specialists. I may be mistaken but I think they will do a diagnostic check for free. Good luck.
i have the same problem with my 01 protege except the tran hasnt gone on me yet ... But i have been reading alot of articules on the O/D light and it comes down to a solenoid electric problem thanks to ford.
02 Protege went to Aamco with tranny problem. Had car towed there on a Saturday right before closing. On Monday they called with the news they would charge $598 to inspect. They did not tell us they were going to charge money on Saturday. Now on Monday they also tell us they will charge us storage money if we do not hurry and get our car off their lot. Please stay away from the Aamco in Westminster, CO. Forcing people to spend money one way or the other. Sounds like the bad guys of old!! Very unhappy with Aamco.

my auto trans would never shift because coffee got spilled and it went through the cup holders making everything sticky so i used degreaser and an air line and now it works like a dream
