i have a 2001 cougar with auto trans works fine until i stop then trans wont work at all

Check your transmission fluid, this must be done with the engine on and transmission in Park. If low (which I suspect) you will see some evidence of leakage probably at the radiator (frequently put flexible lines to the radiator), it can weep the red oil at the fittings on the transmission too-...if you've lost transmission fluid, it has to have gone somewhere?!

case you didn't know, the level, with the car running, should be in the knurled zone or between the two hashmarks on the end of the transmission dipstick.
