2001 mercury sable won't start

Try jumping the vehicle again but this time leave the cables on for a few minutes and the vehicle that is jumping yours leave idling so that it can charge your battery. Once started check to see if battery light is on in the dash. If not still have battery and alternator tested for change.

You may also want to remove battery terminals and clean even if they look good on the outside the connections that goes between terminal and battery post maybe dirty.

If cleaning and re-tightening the connections and charging the battery for a few minutes with the jump start doesn't do it, probably your starter or starter relay had burned out. What you described sounds like the starter cannot engage the fly wheel or is to weak to actually rotate your engine.

I have a 2002 mercury sable. it was running fine yesterday and today it wont start. all the lights come one and the radio. when I turn the key over it makes a clicking sound but wont catch. I am now trying to get it jumped off. it makes the clicking sound with the keys out of the ignition. and still will not turn over. could this be my starter?

First remove battery terminals and clean then give vehicle another jump. Starter clicking with key out of ignition sounds like starter solinoid is sticking. The solinoid is mounted onto the starter. You can try tapping on starter with a hammer while trying to start at the same time. If it starts replace starter if it does not start most likely the starter solinoid but since solinoid is on starter recommend replacing both.
