D is over drive which is really code for 5th gear don't be afraid to use it why ford didn't just put 5 i have no idea. I have a 2dr and mine has a 20 gallon tank suposedly but I've only put 18 gallons in it at the most, which means the gas gauge isn't very accurate never is on any car period.

Well I know in the automatic 1993 Ford Explorer it is normal but on the manual it is for overdrive and it is made for better gas mileage one the freeway or for climbing mountain (mountain road)

You don't want to use overdrive on a steep incline you will stall your truck out. It is better to keep the revs at about 2000 so gear depends on speed. The autos do what they are supposed to in that situation and downshift for inclines.
