The A/C clutch is the section which the belt "rolls on", on the very front of the A/C compressor under the hood. It is controlled by an electrical charge sent to the unit when you operate the dash switch. This "charge" tells the clutch to "activate", thus causing the pulley to spin the shaft inside the compressor and activate the system.
In this picture you will see (from left to right) the Field - the pulley and the clutch. This image is from a repair kit. Often when there's a failure, these three items can contribute to one-another's failure requiring the kit to be replaced.
Should I correct you by pointing out that the belt rides on the pulley and not on the clutch? Or should I just be quiet?
