What does it mean when I crank my car and the car makes rattling noise but goes away right after or it will go away when I switch gears?

Some times it makes a knocking noise
I was told it was the starter but I got
another starter and its still the same it
don't make the rattling noise all the
time just some times

It's really hard to say without hearing it. We've experienced a lot of Flex-Plate failures - cracks or broken out center in our fleet of Crown Victoria PI's and a few F-150s.
