I had the brakes replaced on my car, but the abs light comes on repeatedly & brake pedal starts thumping, it can happen right away or after awhile.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Should I take the car to Ford to have it taken care of? I thought it was a simple
brake issue, I guess not. The car had only 40,000 miles when I bought it, now
it has 58,000 I don't drive far. Now I don't feel safe driving it. What is your
suggestion? Is this a recall?

ABS issues are not related to brake pads and rotors but to the sensors at each wheel and the other ABS components.

If your tires are really bald and slippery the ABS will activate much more often than it should. On wet and slippery roads it may activate quite often which is its job.

So yes you should take it in and have it checked out.

If the abs light is on and not the red brake light you should be able to get to whoever you would normally trust as your mechanic. If you have had the car for 18k miles that would be enough time to need brakes depending on how its driven and the roads traveled. There isn't a recall relating to the abs system on your vehicle that I know of, however there was a recall for a switch on the brake master cylinder about 10 years ago. Ask your friends, neighbors, or someone you trust who they trust to work on their cars. Unless you've forgotten to mention that there has been brake work done recently that could have caused the light to be on any certified technician with the proper tools can repair your car.

Some tires just don't have good wet traction. There is a rating for wet traction on each tire which you can check. What are the driving conditions when you have the most problems with the ABS? Wet or dry?

If the brakes aren't bled correctly on ABS systems it can screw up a sensor or two. You didn't say what all was done too your brakes.
