Should the check engine light come on if the transmission isn't shifting?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My transmission isn't shifting while driving.
Shouldn't this cause a code? My check engine light
didn't come on. It comes on and goes off like it
should at start up. I ask because from what I've
read online is to find out the code to get the
problem. Will it give a code if the lights not on? It
takes a OBD1

OBDi you won't pull any transmission codes, as back in 1992 the transmissions were hydraulically controlled not electronic. Time to take the truck into the transmission shop.

The Beast is back. I was able to use my paperclip and get a code 24 (Vehicle speed sensor), even though the check engine light wasn't on. This sensor is located on the transfer case on 4x4 and on the transmission on 2wd. It's been replaced and now she's happy.
