On a 03 Montero Sport I was told to be careful changeing the oil because the transmission plug could be confused as the oil plug. Is this true?

This is true for any vehicle that has a transmission drain plug, although typically the oil plug will be located in the oil pan, which is near the filter, while the transmission pan drain plug will typically be an allen-head bolt instead of a hex-head bolt to aid recognition.
