1991 Ford Escort has no power when I give it gas, idles rough, changes made with no improvement, any ideas?

Car ran great for several months and one evening coming home going up a hill, it had no power.  We changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition coil, plugs and plug wires and it still is doing the same thing, any ideas on what is wrong?  Thank You.

A few things come to mind: catalytic converters can fail and plug up - no air out/no air in: Timing belt may be going bad and slipped a tooth - change it within the last 60K miles? Does it have any codes in the system? Check the PCV tubing for big cracks. Start with the simple stuff: PCV tubing, Trouble Codes, timing belt, cat. My '93 Escort has nearly 600,000 miles on it. The second engine - out of a '91 - has over 200,000 miles with only timing belts and water pumps. How is the engine internally? Does it still have good compression?
