AC compressor “coming apart”

Asked by LA81 Jul 16, 2018 at 02:11 PM about the 2003 Nissan Altima

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I purchased an 03 Altima.  The AC blows cold
but it makes a noise when its running.  The
mechanic says the compressor is “coming apart”
and that it will “blow particles” into the whole AC
system.  He wants to replace several other parts
and the cost is over $1300.  Does this sound
necessary?  I don’t want to be that female that gets
taken advantage of!  The car was only $2K to begin
with.

A/c repairs are one of the most expensive jobs to do. Time, labor, etc. I would have someone else do an estimate or if you know someone willing to do the work you trust have the garage evacuate the system and have you or your friend do the work such as replacing the compressor, receiver drier, and condenser and refill. To answer your question whether that is within reason for the estimate? Perhaps depending on what exactly is being replaced or not. I think you could do better on the price if you shop around but just make sure you compare apples to apples concerning what parts are going into the mix. Good Luck!
