Why will my car turn on but won't stay on? I put the key in the ignition an crank up the car. It starts very briefly but then shuts off right away.

Asked by Mike_N Aug 23, 2013 at 12:55 PM about the 1999 Lexus ES

Question type: General

It's had this problem before but not
this bad I've always been able to get
it to start. I thought it was just a bad
connection to the battery, but I don't
think that's the case this time I've
tried tightening the terminals, an
making sure there wasn't rust or
grime on them.

Have the idle air control valve cleaned. Get someone to do it who has cleaned one before, so they don't damage the bearing inside.
