"save my brakes" when driving in the mountains.

I am driving in the Smoky Mountains.  I know there is a way to save the
brakes by using the gears.  Can you tell me how?

By down gearing at stops, if automatic ,pull shifter back into lower next gear,if manual drop back to lower gear,
