Car keeps stalling/dying. Not the fuel Pump or fuel filter. ??

Asked by j0shinator24 Oct 30, 2015 at 04:04 AM about the 1998 Nissan Sentra

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car is Nissan Sentra/Pulsar 1998 Manual. With a GA15DNE Engine

Here are some more clues.

1. It restarts fine after it stalls, sometimes have to wait 3-10 seconds before
it works. Key must be physically removed from the key hole for some
reason

2. Typically Hills set it off, though can happen While slowing down, turning
a sharp corner, changing gears, Driving at a moderate constant speed
even just coasting downhill in neutral.

3. Usually runs fine initially and after 5 to 20 minutes of driving can start
stalling. after the first stall it gradually gets worse and worse for the
duration of the trip.If I Leave car for approx 30 minutes (time to cool
down?) will work fine for another while before it starts stalling frequently
again.

4. Once the snowball effect of vehicle stalling has started, Will often rev
very high but not get much acceleration. This problem doesn't exist at the
start of my day to day trips, only once it starts stalling frequently.

5. Here are parts I've replaced.
Oil + Filter
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Fuel Pump
Spark plugs
Distributor cap
1 HT lead (had a bit of gunk and rust in the connection point)

6. Potential Remedies (so i would think)
Replace sensors ie (crankshaft position sensor, throttle position sensor or
oxygen sensor)
Electrical Issues ie (bad ECU)

Distributor problems ie (rotor and HT Leads) though it does arc on all 4
connection points if i partially pull them out while the engine is running

Clogged Fuel injectors or fuel line (Use a complete fuel system cleaner
additive)

-Any advice/opinions/experience on anything of the above would be much
appreciated!

You may have a piece of your fuel indicator float broken off in your fuel tank and it is intermittently blocking the fuel lines.

Your problem could be your coils, or crankshaft positioning sensor. Plus you could be not getting enough power from your battery.

HI, my automatic Nissan Sentra is doing the same thing. I just replaced the crankshaft sensor and speed sensor. And it died the other day after I turned a sharp corner and went up a big Hill. It started again after 20 minutes. Did you ever figure out what the problem was?

Wow! Same problem! My 07 Sentra almost killed me last week, because it just died in the middle of an intersection, and eventually I was able to get it started! Having it owed to shop Friday, will update with diagnosis! Side note: this car has about $5500 dollars in it right now, rebuilt tranny, ac overhaul, every sensor known to man replaced, spark plugs replaced, two separate smoke tests, etc.

I ended up getting rid of my car but it ended up being the temperature sensor. Hope that helps

I have an 2006 nissan sentra that is doing the same thing. It just died on me tonight pulling off from a stop sign and it was on a slight hill. I was able to put it in neutral and it started back up but it seemed to keep trying to die the rest of the way home. I have no check engine lights on and had it on a scanner the other day with no codes. Looking for advice before I spend money fixing things that arent broken.

I have no check engine light either. But, there is a recall on an evap tube, and mine throws a code for an evac? Will definitely get fixed friday, and respond with anything helpful mechanics say! I’ve heard the emissions on these cars are rough, but I’ve already invested, it has very low miles, I’m just not ready to theow in the towel yet....

my 2000 Nissan Sentra has been stalling like crazy i have already put a new Mass Airflow sensor in and a new starter (cause it wouldn't crank) and my service engine soon like is still on i have put new fluids in, oil change, etc and nothing seems to work. What I am thinking it is my fuel pump not getting enough gas to my engine and is pumping more and more fuel out (draining my gas like crazy) or my fuel filter or my fuel lines could be clogged. i have tried many times and finally gave up. btw if you are doing your brakes make sure to torque your bolts cause i brought it to my tech shop and someone didnt torque them and i was driving down the highway and my brakes locked up and my car stalled so i had no steering or brakes and my E brake doesnt work so everyone just be careful

My 2007 Sentra had to have purge valve replaced, caused stalling, and scared me to death! Easy fix, roughly around $280 out the door
