Security light shut down

Asked by Latesha Mar 06, 2018 at 03:00 AM about the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Alero that won’t start.  At first I
thought it was my fuel pump but found out it
wasn’t.  I let a mechanic look at it and he said the
security system shut down my car and he had to
disengage the system.  My car ended up starting
again after he did this.  A few days later my car
wouldn’t start again and now he saying it may be
my ignition.  I don’t know anything abt cars and just
want to know does any of this sound familiar?

My guess is that he "reset" the security system. You can do this with an easy procedure. (i'll paste that below for you) But in my experience, if the security system failed enough to need a reset, it is probably failing beyond what a reset can do. Do you see a light on the dash that says SECURITY when it doesn't start? If so, the security system is bad, and resetting it will be a common occurrence for you until you fix it, or bypass it. Link for info and bypass below. http://www.diy-gm-security.com/

Perform the re-learning procedure............... Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start). Observe the SECURITY light, after approximately 10 minutes the light will turn OFF. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 10 seconds. Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the Sensor Data Code and/or password).

Under neath the glove box you will find a computer module the wire captors you see there will be three of them pull out the middle one you'll find a black wire it will be a 6 and you will find a yellow wire it will be B6 cut the yellow wire go to Radio Shack and get 20 100 ohm resistor spice the black wire connect one side of the ohm resistor on this applies to yellow wire cut yellow wire connect the other side of the resistor follow the 10-minute on ignition tell security light stops blinking then turn off key for 5 seconds and start vehicle you will no longer have a security feature ignition will work every time

Tried this on my 2000 Olds Intrigue, security light never turned off after the 10 minutes or in reality 20 mins. There is NO chip in/on the key for this car. Checked with a chevy dealer parts man. He looked up car, he said these cars my year - make - model did not have chips in keys . I had a spare key made back in 2013 at ACO, also worked fine in car. So I don't understand all of this. But yes there is a Passcode sensor. What is the purpose of this built into the car. Car has no alarm at all. I've been told it is ignition switch, but the man wanted more information and has yet to contact me back. Car ran fine last Tues., two days later car won't do anything but all the lights work and battery is fine. I cannot afford to take to an auto shop and whatever is wring fixed. Terrible feeling being stranded with undependable people not bothering to call and tell me something. Very stressed. Replacing the ignition switch on this car, everything has to come apart, radio, etc. Horrid job. But I want to know definitely what is in- act wrong and what precise part I actually need. Don't want to but ignition switch and still not have car start, stays running and not fixed. If he doesn't want to fix, simply tell me. Don't leave me just hanging. Beyond upset. He said oh I should have brought my scanner??? Think so. SMH, but again to use scanner mustn't the car need to be running? But I'm wondering why security light won't go off at all while running this re-learn procedure. I am not a mechanic. Stressed and frustrated more people than car. If it costs more then the cars worth. IDK. I'm in trouble. No $ to take to shop let alone $ to get different car. Somebody please help.

I wish I had an answer. You are the first person that has the exact same problem as me. And I have been looking for answers for days. My security light stays on, doesn't blink and the reset does nothing because it never shuts off.

It is your ignition switch. There is a resistor built into the key. If it doesn’t match the ignition pass key sensor Data, the vehicle will not start. They sell them on Amazon cheap. Can do it yourself. Has the reprogramming procedures included.
