XV Valet key

Asked by Lindyki May 30, 2015 at 07:01 AM about the 2015 Subaru Crosstrek

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had been told I could not operate (drive) my XV with tbe valet key. My purse was stolen and the dealer said it had ro be towed in to make new keys.. When I said the car can be driven they were surprised. They tried to sell me the insurance.  What is the story?

In the past I thought valet keys were strictly to drive the car. Their purpose was not to allow access to a locked glove or trunk. Have things changed?

This is the answer from my Toyota RAV when I was able to make a plain one dollar key copy and drive it: the car had previously had a security systen installed which involved the chip being installed behind the dashboard. So the car no longer looks for a chip when a key is inserted. That being said I also believe a valet key is supposed to be able to statlrt the car
