Idle is all over the place

Asked by Val Mar 02, 2015 at 01:02 AM about the 2005 Pontiac Sunfire

the idle on my car goes all the way up, past 8 ,car doesn't run rough when it does this,  then it drops all the way back down to 0 and just stays there, other days it would idle perfect at 2.5, what would cause the needle to act this way, thnaks
