I need a new starter for my 2004 grand prix, I also have a 2001 grand prix, with a good starter. I wanted to find out if the 2001 starter would fit my 2004 grand prix? Are they compatible? Thank you

Try it see if it fits. or call the parts store and see if they are the same starter. They will just look it up as they handle them.
I would say no. Because the 2001 has a different series 3800, The new 3800 in the 04 might need more power or less depending on how it was engineered I WOULD DEFIANTLY NOT DO THIS YOU CAN DESTROY YOUR ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM!!
Not. If it fits and it works it will be fine. Unless Sean can explain why it would affect the electrical system. But on the other hand, I do not like taking parts from something different and try to make them work. A lot of the time it cost you more money trying to cut corners.
The reason it COULD hurt the electrical system is because lets say the 04 needs less power to turn over the engine. The 01 starter would try to start the engine too strong and this COULD fry the brain to the starter which could hurt the CPU. I wouldn't do this but its up to you and it might be perfectly fine, but if its the only option you have its up to you.
I have just not heard of this, can't see how, I am open to learning new things...where did you get this information?
the cpu receives and sends information from many different places from the car. It calculates this information to how the car is running. So if it can tell that the car is starting hard it will try to fix it. Over a period of time this could overload the cpu when it cant fix the problem by adjusting voltage to other ignition parts. This is very rare but it could happen. more probable problems of putting the 01 starter in the 04 is that it will not work or if it does it could hurt the engine just like a 3800 supercharge starter will not work in a 3800 naturally aspirated because it puts too much power to the engine to start it. I pointed out a few problems with putting the 01 starter into and 04 might cause these problems. If i was going to put the starter in i would only do it for emergencies and change it as soon as possible with the correct starter. The electrical problems are rare but they can happen.
