There was a power surge while the car was running and everything died could it be the ignition switch or the computer be the problem

I can't explain the power surge, but I'm not sure you have eliminated the battery as the problem. Have it load tested. Occasionally they are so badly shorted out inside that even boosting doesn't work.

Along with munron I can not explain the power surge but I had this happen to me on an older car. There is a fusible link that goes between the starter and the alternator or battery. If that link has burnt then you will get no power inside the car. You can test this by finding the that wire on the starter and either using a test light or multi meter see if you have power at the starter. there should be 12 volts there at all times. Here is a generic drawing I can't find one spacific to the grand prix HTH
