Do 1997 grand ams have some magic chip in the steering column that when screwed up the car will not run and instead of just buying a steering column form a junk yard, it has to be speacial ordered from the dealership? This is what I was told by a dealership.

I think they mean the electronic key is a special order. If a junkyard had the column and the key(s) I would think you'd be fine.

Yes essentially. They have PasslockII integrated into them. Your key has a chip in it and the column reads that chip. I'm not sure if the key needs to match the column or the column just relays it on to another system and then the key needs to match that.

I have a 99 pontiac grand am se 3.4L V6. The issue is that it starts and idles fine but as soon as I go to accelerate it just shuts off. It did have overheating issues but right after I fixed those it started doing this. I replaced the cam position sensor and also the engine coolant temp sensor and it didnt help. I was thinking of replacing the ignition coil packs and housi g but not sure if that would fix it. There are no check engine lights or stored codes . 4 Answers
