On a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT (3.4L 6 cylinder), is the 'Bank 1, Sensor 1' oxygen sensor the upstream or downstream sensor? From what I've looked up it appears to be the upstream sensor, I just want to make sure so I don't buy the wrong part. Thanks a lot!

I took it to a family friend who ran diagnostics on it and was told to get a Bank 1, Sensor 1
position Oxygen sensor.  From what I understand the Grand Am has two oxygen
sensors.. one upstream and one downstream.  From an internet search I've seen 'Sensor
2' referred to as downstream which leads me to believe that Sensor 1 would be upstream.
Let me know if I can provide any more info that would help.

It might have three O2 sensors. "Bank 1" and "Bank 2" are telling you which side of the engine the sensor is located. "Sensor 1" is the upper O2 sensor. "Sensor 2" is the O2 sensor downstream of the catalytic converter. --- I don't know if your V6 has one or two upper sensors.

I have a 2003 v6 and there is only one upstream sensor on the rear bank.

I have a 99 pontiac grand am se 3.4L V6. The issue is that it starts and idles fine but as soon as I go to accelerate it just shuts off. It did have overheating issues but right after I fixed those it started doing this. I replaced the cam position sensor and also the engine coolant temp sensor and it didnt help. I was thinking of replacing the ignition coil packs and housi g but not sure if that would fix it. There are no check engine lights or stored codes . 4 Answers

I didn't pass emission's because of this. The code read it was the camshaft sensor.
