How to test a fuel pump in a 1992 pontiac sunbird
1 Answer
Assuming that you already know the injectors are ok and the fuel pump is the only possible problem (clogged injectors will register too high pressure and shut the pump), there are 4 possibilities. If you hear the pump with the key on, but suspect no fuel is coming thru, first disconnect the pump "out" line, get a short length of rubber hose jammed into the outlet, with the other end in a pan or gas tank, turn the key "on". Pump will run continuously if it's working correctly. If you hear nothing with the key on, it's an electric issue. Check the relay and fuse, if they are okay try running a jumper wire direct to the pump. If you get nothing, the pump is bad. If the pump works, but no fuel is coming out, you may have a clogged pickup in the tank (filter or screen). If the pump works, and fuel is coming out, but nothing is getting to the engine, the fuel line is clogged/kinked/corroded.
