conversion kit to make Subaru Forrester 2001 manual transmission a 2 WD?

Mechanic says we need to replace rear differential but am having a hard time
finding part since our's is manual transmission.  Heard about conversion kits
to make car a 2 wheel drive.  Could this work?  Or any leads on where to find
differential for manual?

It is likely that a conversion to two wheel drive would cost about as much as just fixing the car and you would be de-valuing the car by quite a bit by converting it to 2-wheel drive. Keep the safety and traction of all-wheel drive and fix it.

Thank you for your answer. A big part of looking for alternatives has been the difficulty in finding a used rear differential at a reasonable price. Mechanic originally quoted me 600 for the job when he thought he could find a used one in our immediate area. It was already a sizable expense to consider and I threw out the idea of doing a conversion not knowing what that might cost but was curious if it was a feasible solution. Of course safety of car is a huge issue, value not so much as it has a lot of miles on it. Again thank you for responding, I am grateful for any feedback!
