the transmission on my much liked legacy is shot. Can I replace the complete set...engine and transmission with on off of of a 98 forester

yes as long as they both make use of the same tranny (auto V manual) and they have the same size engine it would be an easy swap, if your legacy had a 2.2L and the forester is a 2.5L you'll need the foresters ECU, same tranny wise if you have a manual and are going to an auto you will need the auto TCU (and the same inversely).

Agree with most of the part on the other man's response. But you do have to think about OBD-1 which is the 96, and OBD-2 which is the 98. I did the same swap in my chicks car, a little different. It as a 98 forester blown ej25d. (Typical Headgaskets) So we sourced a 97 impreza 2.2 and trans. and swapped everything over. Problems we ran into you need to use the ej25d intake manifold, throttle body and all sensors so the harness will plug into all that from the 2.2 long block. Lastly, we ran the 2.5 ecu. What we noticed, bad idle, shakes a little, assuming cause of the different tunning, compression ratio's and what not. I would recommend getting a fuel controller or the correct ecu to run so it gets good mileage and doesnt accelerate poorl. Thanks, www.thevinyzone.com "supporting the car enthusiast's decal needs"
