what is causing my 03 Toyota Tundra with manual trans to go into limp mode

bought truck 45 days ago, check engine light does not come on even while
starting, it has 192. k miles. odd odor from exhaust started over a week ago, in
first gear wont go over 15 miles will not allow me to shift into next gear,  makes
a popping type noise  is it a exhaust issue or plugs or what

Thank you ? I mean Thank you for the info about where to start not sure i can afford to go down the rest of that road, the converter is not cheap but again thank you for your help and time I will use it.
