how do i know which variable valve to change in my 2001 toyota avalon

I got my car scanned from a friend and it read that it needed a vvt valve changed but i go to a mechanic and he says their is two valvs and it will cost me less if i knew which one is the one he has to change the hole job will cost me $160.00 is this a good price or shuld i keep shoping around price includes parts and labor and search fo the faulty valve.

well it has been an ongoing problem i have already changed the radiator and the water pump but it still over heats when we go up hills and I think the timing is off as well i just recently changed the alternator and the the belt that goes around it.

If your timeing is off that will cause it to run hot. Have the timeing reset first
