What lead rav 4 to switch itself off

I have a problem with my Rav4 (2001), was running great then it went off in the midle of my driving and was not able to start it,I found that the engine oil was low and the car was a bit overheated, the mechanic manage to start it but now have two problems 1.miss and 2. doesnt hold on silence what could be the problem. I tried replacing the plugs but still didnt work

Cars need OIL. Cars need coolant. surprised you did not heed the warning lights that came on to tell you this. Shame really because possibly things have gone toasty on us. Will have to start at the beginning and describe each symptom and how this came to be-
