OBD for 95.5 Tacoma

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a '95.5 Tacoma (V-6) that was built with a "OBD II connection" under the dash. The emissions sticker does not read "OBD II certified". I want to buy an OBD reader but the tech rep at Equis told me that neither an OBD I or II reader will work. He said I must buy an OEM reader capable of interpreting "OBD One and a half" codes. I called my Toyota service department and they said an OBD II reader will work but the Equis rep disagreed. Any suggestions?

Dealership should be right. Likely they are using an OBD-II reader. Check with Advance Auto or Autozone and see if their "free code reading" service works with your car. If it does, you should be fine to purchase an OBD-II style reader.

An OBD II will work on them I too have a 95.5 Tacoma V6 and it does work. I don't know why they don't say what it is but it is OBD II
