what size V8

Asked by uhcjim Jul 31, 2019 at 07:02 PM about the 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle

Question type: General

I have a restored 1964 Chevelle Malibu SS I checked the VIN and know that it had a V8 when manufactured. It now has a 350 ci. Is there a way or place I can find out whether it had 357 ci or 283 ci?

Hi. That's a very cool car and special to me for personal reasons (my friend had a black one when I was growing up and I drove it everywhere). I'm not sure which engine came in your car originally but a 350 is a V-8. You probably know that though. LOL! My 1st Car (1972 Nova) and my 2nd Car (1971 Chevelle) both had 350 V-8 engines. I don't know if this will help you but I read an article about your car here... https://auto.howstuffworks.com/chevro let-malibu1.htm It did have some interesting info if you'd like to read it. There's info about the 3 different engine options your car had if you scroll down the page to the 2nd photo and read the paragraph above it. I would think your VIN should tell you. If you don't find your answer here, maybe give your local Chevy dealer a call for assistance. Cheers!

One more thing... here's an excerpt from the article telling engine options (283 & 327) for a 1964 Chevelle Malibu SS: "Available V-8s included a 220- horsepower 283, 250-horsepower 327, and (after mid-year) a 300-horsepower variant of the 327" Best wishes!

Thanks for the info. Will check it out. Like it that you had a nova. I think chevy put the first 350s in the xamaros in 68 n then added them to the chevy ll n chevelles after thst.
