Question type: General

My 1978 Camaro 305 is reading that it's idling at 5000+rpm. Could this be or is the gage broken? The engine sounds fine, runs well, but eek!

Ok, a 305 shouldnt be pushed much past 5k. 5000 rpm's is alot and you will hear it, also your shift from park to drive would be VERY hard and the car would take off down the road with no throttle.

As Andrew said, 5k is extremely high. Most Chevy v8's redline around 5500. Sounds like a faulty guage to me.

I highly doubt your 305 would run very long at 6k heck I know mine started sounding pretty bad after 4500 rpm

If it sounds like it is idling normally then it is probably around 750. If it were at 5000 rpm it would be very loud and shift with tires squealing.

Hey everyone. Thanks for the responses. Its definitely a faulty gage. I'm positive of it now! She purs like a kitten.
