1975 Mustang 2 4 cylinder starting problems

Asked by DerikF Aug 31, 2019 at 07:29 PM about the 1973 Ford Mustang

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This car is a 1975 2.3L 4 cylinder. Anything
between 73 and 79 wasnt an option on the car
select

I took the distributor cap off and cleaned the
carbon off of the distributor cap points and once I
was done no start, just the occasional backfire.
Got a new cap and stuck it on. No dice. Needed to
replace spark plugs and ignition coil so I went
ahead and did that.still no dice. After having
messed with so many things a plug going to the
alternator that was wrapped in electrical tape
came undone and i dont know how it goes
together. It has 4 holes that look like an electrical
outlet with pins that plug in the same as a cord
would but separate. Now nothing at all works. I
used a volt meter and I'm getting 2 volts to the
alternator after plugging them in how I think they
go but nothing works on the car. I dont see an
ignition fuse or anything on the fuse box under the
dash driver side.. The dome light doesnt even
work. Any ideas?

If the car has points the gap may have closed up.
