Heads from an '88 or up, headers w/ an x-pipe and dual exhaust, gears 3.73's, a 4bbl intake and carburetor, and a new cam kit... that should boost you at least 2 sec. ahead.. and you can do it all for under $500 (if you do it yourself..)
put a 460 w/ c6 in it
or don't, big block ford power...Chevrolet= Cracked Heads Every Valve Rattles Oil Leaks Every Time
Where are you buying all of this for under $500? Please let me know, I have a mustang too, and it sure as hell is not that cheap to build. The cheapest long tube headers are $100 new (flowtech), an x-pipe is atleast another $100; if you want a decent used one that is, then you still need to get a set of mufflers to go along behind that. And then on top of that, If your gettin a 4bbl intake, thats another $75-100 for a used and dirty cheapo edelbrock preformer, another $150 for a in-need-of-slight-rebuild holley carb with atleast 600cfm. Then, you have your cam and lifters. A cheap, a near stock duration and lift cam costs atleast $150, if its on sale that week, (highly unlikely...) My setup cost me a little over $1000 so far. not including the updated distributer (which youre gonna also want to change), the msd box(for more power to the spark plugs), and the chrome dress up stuff. And just to show im not bullshitting you, heres the stuff my motor is built with: cam is a lunati voodoo cam and lifters, hydraulic flat-tappet, duration 207'/213', lift .483"/.499", intake is a weiand stealth, and its got a holley carb 670cfm single pumper, flowtech long tube headers. That combo right there is just about $1000 new from summit racing, as I bought. I remember the costs cause im just a kid who puts every nickle and dime into his car. but yes, the parts listed as cheap to do as $500 are a great start to making that '82 faster. You may want to up your fuel system and electonics system as well however. heres a shot of my motor.
If you want a boat anchor..buy a chev...if you want to have fun but gears...I recommend 4.10s with carbed 5.0...if it is a 5 speed...if it is still a 4 gear,no lower than 3.73s...gears are the best bang for the buck, but are harder to install...I have a stock engined 5.0{cam,valve springs, rockers all oe}and I run 13.7s on radials @102...83 GT 5speed...4.10s 2.5 exhaust Hedman shortys 650 Holley mech sec...no a/c no p/s 2900lbs...Hope this helps you....5.0l Ford all the way.... Chevys suc ass
You can get a pack of matches for free and lit one and drop it in the gas tank. That will probebly get it moving pretty quick
I can get a cam for under 280 easily...even for a big block, I just bought a set of lightly used motive 3.90 gears for 75. You can pull a posi out of a junk van or truck with 8.8 and rebuilb it for about 75 bucks. try junk yard for the heads too, new valves, guides and seats arent cheap, but with a little more than 300 can be done.
you could do a mild 460 c6 swap for around a grand, or if you pull the motor out of a running vehicle and piece together a swap kit you can do it for less than a grand if you do it yourself. I confess, I have 6 grand in my stang, 31 spline rearend.. 12:1 466 SCJ.. C6 w/ 3000 stall, 8 pt cage, through the floor subframe conn. etc
well if you are keeping fuel injection you can get a diablo racing chip, hotter coil, and plug wires, cold air enduction. those are the cheap things if you have the money you can order a complete scat rotating assembly with a dart block from my racing sponsors machine shop for 600-1000 depending on package and you can get a set or roush 64 cc ho heads you will kicking quite a bit with all that.
www.summitracing.com best place for cams intakes ect. good set of roller rockers maybe get the heads redone instead of spending 1500 on new heads. i cant stress enough upgrade ignition. cheapest horsepower you can buy. get a kit box, coil, distributor for around 450.
Gravity, man, gravity. I reckon terminal velocity on that thing is pretty damn high. Drive the piece off a high cliff, that'll get it going.
or you know strap a few rocket engines to it. they sell them at walmart yanno.....
take off the air conditioning and the altenator and connect the altenator under the car to the drive shaft by puttin a pully on it running it to the altenator this allows for a big horsepower gain and might cost 100 dollars
Honestly I don't think you want to start with a 1982 Mustang as a platform for a good car. Bad chassis, bad engine. If its what you really then there's 2 ways to go. Stick to natural aspiration increasing intake and exhaust flow by getting a aftermarket exhaust from the manifold to the muffler, and aftermarket intake manifold. Since its an 82' its probably fuel injected to increase the flow of fuel to your engine. If you have some money to throw around I would look at forced induction. Supercharger or turbo. But it will be costly and a ford motor made in 82' won't take much psi. I would look into just buying a faster and better handling car in the first place. If you don't have much money I would buy a mid 90's nissan that will take an sr20det. and throw of those in. That is the best and cheapest setup you can get for the buck. Engine capable of over 400 reliable horsepower and good chassis'. If you have more money start with something newer like the new Cobalt SS or Mazdaspeed 3. If you have a ton of money which you probably don't since you want to make an 82 mustang fast. Go for a Skyline. GTR.
It's all pointless until you define goals for yourself. a 460 will make it fast in a straight line, but you're going to have to upgrade the rear-end and the transmission to cope with the torque, and then the 82 needs some pretty robust frame stiffening or you're going to crack the floorpan (which is VERY common on fox cars, even with a medium build street 302. On top of that you're definitely going to have to upgrade your shock/spring combo. you have a pretty rare car, because of all the idiots who have done the conversion without thinking ahead, so do your planning first. oyour first job should to prepare the car for the power, and you can't really do that until you have an idea of your hp/tq goals.
drop in a 402 stroker thats all ull need
Buy a small block 260,289,302,then put a cam with a 470 lift/300 dur, find some 351w heads from 69-70 DO0E heads, then put a prof romance rpm Elderbrock intake/ with matching carb 600-650cfm's,long tube headers,H pipe with 2.5" exhaust, with some good mufflers,Flowmasters,Flowtec's, or even Glasspac's, and run them all the way out the back, [for great sound] and add a 372 gear in the diff. and you'll have about 335hp's and depending what trans, you want to put in it, c4,c6,3speed,or 4speed. IT WILL BRING THAT STANG TO LIFE!!!!!!!!....hope this helps P.S. You'll have to get some 1/2" bushings for the heads, because your are 7/16's heads bolts, EBAY all day long for 32.00$$$$
Joe: that was 6 years ago ,in this economy today, i got my DO0E heads off craigslist, just rebuilt for 75.00$, Commerce mi. my Elderbrock cam, lifters, and dual springs for the valves, for 50.00$ Dave's machine shop,Groose ill. mi, with just about 2000k miles, he went a bigger motor, and the intake and carb was 200.00 like new, off, again Craigslist. people in Michigan here just want to get there non using parts out of there way, and will deal. You just have to take the time, and hunt for the parts. and the ring and pinion was 125.00$ new, AGAIN craigslist, right in Romulus mi. hope this helps
