Ford Freestar 2007 Stalls While Driving ... Starter Will Engage After 15-40 Minutes

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2007 Ford Freestar (107,000 miles) began stalling intermittently after driving less than 5 miles after a cold start.  There is no hesitation.  The engine just stops.  The electricals all work when this happens; except that the starter will not engage for 15-40 minutes after stalling.  After sitting a while (15-40 minutes), it starts up with no problem; and continues to run from that point on.  This began happening with temperatures at or below freezing (25-31 degrees) at night, and seems to happen after sitting all night.  I have been able to drive normally most of the time; with no stalling.  And after starting back up after stalling, the vehicle runs fine.

I have replaced the battery, had the starter replaced, and had the oil changed.  The stalling began after the new starter was installed and after the oil change.  The shop I took my van to cannot replicate the problem after driving several days on two different occasions.  The same was true of the Ford dealership.  No check engine light ... no problem codes.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

More information -- After a cold night in the 30's, the starter wouldn't even engage, even though all other electricals were fine. It started after the temperatures increased, and ran fine. The van has also stalled while driving on two separate mornings (at 3.5 miles and 1.5 miles) -- again, with temps in the 30's the night before. After stalling, there is a click when I try the ignition and another click when I release it. After twenty minutes, the starter engaged and started and ran with no problem.
