We are stuck in the mountains and truck won't start. We have charger on the passenger
side battery. How long might this take? Do I have to charge both batteries separately or
will one battery charge the other?

Depends.... Are the batteries hooked up in parallel or is the second battery hooked up through a battery isolator? :) If the batteries are hooked up as parallel that means both batteries are hooked to still give 12 volts but more capacity. Charging one battery would eventually charge the other. If the batteries are hooked by an isolator you need to charge the starting battery. Charging the auxillary battery won't help the starting battery because the starting battery is protected by the isolator.

Thanks. We appreciated the advice. We're charged and on our way down the mountain.

How do I determine if the batteries are hooked up in parallel or through a battery isolator? Also which is the battery that starts the engine? Thanks in advance, Carol

Diesels are almost Always wired in parallel from factory. An isolated battery would be a custom option, and it would have a switch of some sort to allow you to send that "isolated" power back to the truck when its needed. Diesels require 2 batteries because they use alot more power to start than Gas engines.
