what is the difference between AWD and 4WD ?

AWD is always on...4WD you have the option to turn on and off
AWD in the crv balances traction between the tires so the do not slip. 4WD version allows you to turn off the traction control to allow the tires to slip - which is what you need to do if trying to move car out of an muddy, slippery, or icy patch. Contrary to Jonathan's post - you do not have the option to turn off the 4WD, only the traction control.
How do you know what kind of drive you have? I dont know if i have 2 or 4 or awd...where in or on the car,can i find this answer...i have a 1996 crv...
