AWD in the crv balances traction between the tires so the do not slip. 4WD version allows you to turn off the traction control to allow the tires to slip - which is what you need to do if trying to move car out of an muddy, slippery, or icy patch. Contrary to Jonathan's post - you do not have the option to turn off the 4WD, only the traction control.
