What if the positive and negative wires crossed what
damage could it cause

Could blow mega fuse/fuses, fusible links, ruin the battery, fry battery harness, damage the ECU/computer module. Granted some of these are worse case scenarios.

If you crossed them by connecting them to the wrong battery terminals it will fry all sorts of things. Just touching them to each other would do nothing.
