Driving if brake pads need replacing...

Asked by Gen Jan 07, 2016 at 07:22 PM about the 2004 Toyota Camry

Question type: General

Hi... I know I need to replace my brake pads (auto
car) asap and was told that when they start rattling
it needs to be done...I'm trying to get the funds
together to do this asap. I've noticed the last few
days a rattling when accelerating, but not on
braking, hence not sure if this is the rattling
mentioned or something else. I'm driving as
carefully and conservatively as I can and trying to
avoid unnecessary travel, though with a child,
school holidays, and my own mobility issues this
isn't as straightforward.
Is this the brake pads? How long do I have? Any
suggestions? Unsure as to trim but it's v6 sedan

Brake pads that are almost worn out have a tell tale that makes a squealing noise when you use the brakes. If you know you need brake pads don't jeopardize your life and your child's life by putting it off.

The rattle is probably something else. Can't say what without more information.

The longer you wait.. drive the car... the more expenseive it will be. The pads , that Full_of_Regrets is talking about are called 'sounding tabs' that mean replace them now. Or you will dig holes in your rotors, and up the cost by about $300

Besides risking more expensive repairs, driving with bad brakes is in many places illegal. And, in addition to the risk of being in an accident, if they discover that your brakes are bad and you knew it, you could be subject to fines, up to the revocation of your driver's license. My advice is to take care of this immediately before an incident occurs. https://dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/dl/vioptct
