I own a 2000 Celica. The oil consumption is excessive. Is this common?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Toyota Celica (one owner) has done 160,000 miles and still going strong. Nice car apart from design blind spot. Uses alot of oil. So I took it to my mechanic (who is exceptionally good). He said the 2000 had a design fault with the 1600cc engine, not enough gas ports on the pistons so oil gunks up. The catylic converter works a treat as it does not show burning oil. He siad Toyota recognised the fault and changed the design in 2001. Some owners of the 2000 model had the engine replaced. Why was this not a recall? Can anyone enlighten me on this one?

....well regardless there are a few things we can do such as put a clean air filter in...change the PCV valve and the "pad" for the intake plenum~ (if so equipped) gotta make the crankcase be able to puff into the intake plenum...new PCV valve with every fill-up should stop the oil consumption~

OK- you are talking about a car more than a decade old with almost two grand on the engine- why worry about recalls or design flaws- you got an old, used car with a worn out engine- it is burning oil for many reasons

I understand the car is getting on, and it is an 1800cc engine (sorry). New rings would be obvious and I accept there is wear and tear. Just wondering if anyone anyone knows about the engine modification? Or is it another concocted conspiracy against Toyota?

I have a 2001 Celica GT and it was going through some serious oil. I put paper towels around the oil fill cap and noticed that was the source of the leak. $12.51 later and she is back to normal! http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/MC/7962-07043988.html?utm_content=MC&utm_term=1977-2005+Toyota+Celica+Oil+Filler+Cap+Stant+77-05+Toyota+Oil+Filler+Cap+1993+2001&utm_source=google&utm_medium=ff&utm_campaign=PartsGeek+Google+Base&gclid=CjwKEAjw9qafBRCRiYrL4-fpuFkSJACvocQ1KCkqz9DwHPn2cyHEHSQ85d0qGSd7UPKpsQ7Or1GuxBoCLOrw_wcB

I have 2000 Toyota Celica GT that also burns oil, primarily when taken out on the highway. There is no visible leakage or excessive smoke or high temps. PCV, compression, rings were checked and good. My next step through suggestions by a couple of good mechanics, which I am not, is bad valve guides. On the fence, because the oil consumption is really only glaring flaw. It is going to cost me 1600 because there is so much labor and other preventive issues to handle, since the engine will torn anyway. Everything I've read and experienced would point to valve guides?
