Hello, For a question this specific, I am going to have to refer you to a service manual. I would recommend purchasing either a Chiltons or Haynes manual from your local auto store. You can also try to find one less expensively on eBay. Here is a link to get you started: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=unknown&sbrftog=1&from=R10&submitsearch=Search&satitle=1998+avalon+manual&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=02129&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fpos=02129&lsot=&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fpos=02129 Best of luck! usually the plates around the shifter pops out or is held on by screws. if you need spacific intructions listen to the guy above and go with manual. but usually a do-it-yourselfers can figgure it out by playing around with it a while. Look for small trims they are usually held on by clips
