speedometer needdle is not moving and odometer has stopped reading.when you run the engine and press the accelerator pedal the check engine light gets and the 'OD' light starts to blink.

Get the codes read at the parts store. Write down the code number. Post the number here. The "OD" light blinking might show a transmission problem. You might want to not use the vehicle until it's checked out to prevent damage.

yowsers, 1998...tell me you've already replaced the battery and all is fit and tidy, not full of corrosion like a blue afro and the other grounding end has been wirebrushed free of corrosion before we start deducing anything.
