Check engine light came on at 119,600 miles, Why?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have only had the car 1 1/2 months. All fluid levels are fine. The car starts fine and runs well. Up until yesterday afternoon, the light came on and stayed on. This morning it stayed on as well.

hi lissy, It could a whole number of problems. It could be something as simple as the gas cap wasn't on tightly enough and air got into the systen (it will eventually just flush itself out) to something more serious which would have to get looked at by a mechanic. I recommend having a mechanic looking at the car to make sure that continued driving isn't damaging the car even more.

If your gas cap is on tight, its the catalytic converter. It may need changing.
Frequently, the check engine light comes on when an oxygen sensor needs to be replaced.

I have a 1997 corolla. At 120,000 engine light came on and it was the oxygen sensor(off of exhaust manifold). You can have the engine light "read" at Auto zone, or Schucks for free. This posting is likely anchient, still thats my 2 cents worth. Derek out
Hi my Toyota Corolla 2001 I had it for 2 years and today the check engine light just came on why I was taking my daughter to school
Gotta get the code read which is free folks. Don't be freaking out until you know what it is most check engine lights are emissions controls

autozone checks are a waste of time. they are designed to sell every possible part in the system it brings up starting with the cheapest to the highest and most of the time it doesnt actually address or fix ythe underlying cause. you are much better off taking it to a reputable shop where a lot of times they will wave the fee of hooking it to their scope if you have them fix it. this usually cost 55 to just over 100 dollars but will zero in on the exact promblem instead of a loose ball in the outfield that you get using autozone
