"lights" light on 88 Camry dash

A garage just quoted $275 plus labor for a replacement "dash light box."  I'm in a bad place because I suddenly have no brake lights, and the foot switch and fuse look good. The shop says the box is the culprit.

Can they just bypass it?

Note, if it adds anything, I've had a long standing short (I suppose) with the leftmost of the 5 brake lamps. The past year, after starting, as soon as I touch the brakes, that dash light comes on, and the lamp does not illuminate.

http://www.camryforums.com/forum/general-tech-8/toyota-light-failure-sensor-bypass-2591/ shows answers #7 ("break down of each wire") and on the next page #11 ("wiring colors at the sensor") but in each case the responder says that fuses get blown or lights stay on always or such. WTF?? Does Toyota change a simple 12 wire wiring scheme for different model years or what??

I did not find any box on RockAuto. If you can buy the box, you can replace it yourself. Find a Camry forum and see if there are any solutions or a DIY for replacement. The shop bypassed and said the rewired wasn't bad. 2 hour labor charge. On to the next problem now. Thanks for your response tenspeed.
