If everything in the car works great besides the timing belt and water pump then it is worth fixing up. Depending on what engine-chassis you have the cost would vary for the timing belt, but it would be around $16-$40. When changing the timing belt you should also change the tensioner spring which would cost around $40-$50. To repair the water pump the cost will depend on which parts you have. Most of the parts are not too expsensive. The water pump excluding the thermostat and other smaller parts should be around $40-$90. The other parts like the o-rings and gasket are not too expensive. Either way doing these repairs will be cheaper than buying a new car. If you order these parts online you you can get free shipping and can compare prices easier. You can also find manuals on how to fix it yourself. Otherwise in addition to the cost of the parts you will have to pay for the labor.

cost to install a new timing belt in a 1989 toyota camry
i would most definetly check the oil and make sure there is no water in the oil, i would replace the belt to start it and check and see if there was mist coming from your exhaust if this is all good you are good to go because with the water pump being defective it could have cause the car to overheat causing serious damage

Definitely worth it. The 2.2 3S-FE engine in these cars is one of the best Toyota ever made, and the transmissions are great on these, too. My wife had two 1990 Camry cars, one of which had 250k miles on when we sold it, the other which was pushing 150k.
To have the repairs performed for you, you are probably looking at $750+
How to remove a cam shaft pulley off of a 1991 Toyota Camry without pulling engine out of car?

Tropikalpirate probably means also replace the tensioner pulley and spring because the pulley has a bearing that can wear out allowing the belt to run at an angle and damage it or allow it to come off.
