1978 Toyota Corolla 2TC engine. Can I remove the manifold heat shield? Badly worn and may be causing exh. leak. New starter has its own shield.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The existing heat shield is badly worn and has large gaps where it meets the engine.  Finding a replacement is impossible.  The new starter I installed came with its own heat shield attached.

You are right about being impossible to find. I have spent a while looking for an application from another Toyota engine that will fit, and man...no can find. one. You really should have it if at all possible It protects more than starter.... the designers put it on there for a reason, they would not go to the cost in manufacturing otherwise. If you do away with it you might be ok, but try this link... it is a data base of literally thousands of junkyards (opps auto-recyclers) and best of luck http://products.car-part.com/sales.html

Been reading forums but not much info on the '78 2T engine... but the good news is a lot of guys with Corollas with the 2T in the early 80's on Corollas and Celicas have gotten rid of the heat shield and say no problems.
