overdrive failure

I have a 1988 Toyota Corolla 4-door sedan with 86k and for about 300 miles the overdrive worked intermittently then stopped altogether, otherwise runs great?

Could just be that there was too much wear and tear on the overdrive gear. Sounds like a mechanic is going to have to take a look at it. That is if you really, really need it. If it runs fine without it I would say just go with it.
