It could also be a short somewhere, meaning that a bare wire has grounded when it shouldn't have- a car that old will have some questionable wiring- to keep your classic's electrical system operating properly you will need a wiring diagram and a test light- then put on your detective hat-

Didn't have mega fuses back then. Fuselnks will be down by the starter.
